Injuries From Escalator Accidents Are on the Rise

Personal Injury Lawyer Representing People Injured In Escalator Accident

In New York City, escalators are everywhere, from transit stations to department stores. And while they seem fairly harmless, they cause many personal injuries.

The American Association for Justice (AAJ) reports that “for every accident that happens on an elevator, there will be 18 accidents suffered on escalators. … Escalator-related injuries and deaths in the U.S. have been steadily rising every year.”

According to an article on Justice.org, the number of escalator injuries has grown steadily over the last 25 years. In 1990, there were about 4,900 escalator injuries and deaths in the United States. A decade later, in the year 2000, that number had doubled to over 10,100 deaths and injuries. By 2013, the number grew to 12,260 injuries and deaths in the U.S.

Children and the Elderly Are at the Greatest Risk Of Injury In An Escalator Accident

Young people and the elderly are much more likely to be the victims of escalator accidents. Most of these injuries are caused by falls, which youngsters and older people are more likely to experience.

Children 14 and under and people over 65 accounted for approximately 60 percent of the escalator injuries reported between 1990 and 1994.  Between 1994 and 2002, an estimated 26,000 escalator-related injuries among children zero to 19  occurred. In the year 2011 alone, 4,900 patients over age 65 were treated in emergency rooms for escalator-related injuries.

How Much Can I Recover if I Was Injured In An Escalator Accident

Every case is different; it depends on the extent of your injuries and other damages. A bad fall could result in months or years of follow-up care, especially for senior citizens, whose injuries may take longer to heal. Be sure to save and document all your medical expenses and lost wages that occur as a result of the fall.
